Riding a motorcycle is an exhilarating experience. Sadly, many San Diego drivers fail to see motorcycle riders and accidents happen too often due to motorists’ negligence. Bikers in their late 50’s make up the age group with the highest fatality rates.

In case of an accident, you can file a claim for the damage to your bike and your body in the form of pain and suffering, physical impairment and scarring. You can also demand compensation for medical bills and lost wages. But the choice of a good attorney is important as it can make or break your case.

Why Should You Carry Maximum Uninsured Motorist and Underinsured Motorist Insurance Coverage on Your Motorcycle?

Picking the right type of insurance for your motorbike could be confusing. There are so many different types of insurance. You must ask your insurance company for what is called “Uninsured/Underinsured motorist coverage”. This is so because if you suffer a crash and the at-fault driver does not have insurance, you can make a claim with your own insurer to pay for the damage caused in the accident by the other driver.

Also, if the other driver did not carry enough liability insurance to pay for your injuries then you can file an “Underinsured motorist claim” with your own insurance besides the claim you make against the other motorist’s insurance company.

Common Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

Almost all motorbike riders know that other motorists just do not pay attention to bike riders. And, most of the motorcycle accidents happen when other drivers fail to yield the right of way to the bikers. They cause the crash either by coming into the motorcycle lanes, pulling out in front of a bike or taking sharp turns in front of the motorbike riders.

Typical Injuries In A Motorcycle Accident

Leg Injuries. A motorcycle crash can cause a very serious leg injury like a fracture or it could even lead to amputation. This is so because a bike offers little or no leg protection when a vehicle hits the motorcycle from the side. It is often the bike rider’s lower leg that is injured most in such a scenario. A broken tibia (shinbone) is the most common type of leg fractures in bike accidents. A tibia plateau fracture can also involve the knee joint. And, if this happens, there is a higher risk for post-traumatic arthritis.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A motorbike accident can also cause a serious brain injury. In case of accidents the head of a person may have to move at a very high speed and then forced to stop suddenly. Such sudden movement of the head makes the brain strike against the inside of the skull that may cause a traumatic brain injury. Such injuries cannot be avoided even by wearing a helmet. Symptoms of a traumatic brain injury include word-finding problems, partial memory loss, attention difficulties, personality changes, and emotional outbursts. If a TBI is suspected you must see a neurologist who specializes in brain injuries.

Neck and Back Injuries. Fractures in the backbone including the neck section are very common in bike accident injuries. Ruptured or herniated disks can also result from an accident if the spine is injured. Symptoms of such injuries include sharp pain and tingling going into the arms or hands if the neck is involved. If there is a herniated disk in the back, symptoms may include a sharp pain going into one or both the legs, butts, and feet. An MRI is usually required to diagnose a disk rupture.

Other major motorcycle injuries include amputation of limbs, broken ribs, injured shoulder, broken wrist or arm, and road rash.

The best time to hire a motorcycle accident lawyer is right after the accident. The scene of the crash should be photographed and witnesses interviewed before memories fade and main evidence is lost.
